The best new movies in 2024

1. The Zone of Interest

  • Film
  • Dramatic

A great artist is able to offer a new perspective on an old subject. Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust masterpiece takes Hannah Arendt’s phrase “the banality” and shows what it really looks like. Christian Friedel and Sandra Huller’s family life is a picture of a cursed domesticity. The horrors are not visible but they are never far from our ears. Johnnie Burn created a soundscape that features the yelling and cracking of rifles as well as scenes of children playing and gardening. The result is a Come and Seefor 2020s.

2. Poor Things

  • Film

Is this a story about sexual exploitation or a sensual journey of coming-of age on helium? Yorgos Langthimos’s adaptation of Alasdair Grey’s cult novel from 1992 was a late arrival, but the conversation that followed it was a hard one. The Greek, who has also created Dogtooth and The Lobster, as well as The Favourite, is an expert at creating lopsided and not-for everyone visions of human experience. This Victorian Frankenstein riff is no different. Emma Stone is the magnet in this Victorian Frankenstein riff. The most bizarre film to receive 11 Oscar nominations.

3. Dune Part Two

  • Film
  • Science Fiction

Does Denis Villeneuve ever miss? Denis Villeneuve is hitting the mark with blockbuster movies – his first sequel continues this hot streak. Part Two adds moral complexity to the world-building, galactic planning and reimagining of Frank Herbert’s sci fi epic. Even the most ludicrously starred cast cannot compete with the monstrous Tube trains that race through the sandy substrata in Arrakis.

4. All of Us Strangers

  • Film
  • Thrillers

Andrew Haigh’s ghostly romance is a masterpiece. It will have you crying on the movie floor. The story is about a screenwriter, played by Andrew Scott (who is wonderful), who lives a lonely life in an apartment block. His lonely existence is disrupted when he meets his parents, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell, at his childhood home. It’s at least semi-autobiographical – remarkably, Haigh shot it in his own boyhood home – and that makes its undercurrents (connection, loneliness, and just really missing mum and dad) feel personal as well as universal.

5. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

  • Film
  • Adventure and action

The Mad Max movies have the best value for moviegoers. Fury Road, and now Furiosa are the most mythologically-rich blockbusters since Lord of the Rings. They also come with a deranged need to shock and amaze. Furriosa is a more bloated story than the Fury Road. It’s a story that spans generations, with Alyla and Anya Taylor Joy stepping in for Charlize Theron. It’s a must-see, though, with Chris Hemsworth as the oratorical, scheming Dementus and a War Rig chase that is as thrilling as any in its predecessor. The Australian doctor is the best at what he does.

6. Green Border

  • Film
  • Dramatic

Agnieszka’s Holland is the perfect counter to populists who are demonizing refugees. Green Borderis an intense watch that follows a group of Syrians, Africans, and Afghans who are shuffled back and forth from Belarus to Poland. They become human chess players in European politics, and they suffer in the frozen forests of Eastern Europe. There is hope in this film, though: the young Europeans who reject their elders’ barbarism, and the beautifully-drawn migrants, including some played by real refugees. This is a brilliant but bleak piece of humanist cinema.

7. Hit Man

  • Film
  • Comedy

The lack of a cinema release for Richard Linklater’s hilarious comedy-thriller is frustrating, as it’s exactly what Friday night cinemas are about. Glen Powell, who plays Anybody But You with the cheshire cat smile of a young Tom Cruise, is a depressed New Orleans professor. He discovers that he has a talent for impersonating assassins to the police. He meets Adria Arjona’s abusive wife and would-be killer and his morals are twisted in the most bizarre ways. If you missed it, it will be available on Netflix.
