1. Taste of Things

  • Film

Tran Anh Hung’s Cannes Prize-winning period drama features Juliette Binoche with Benoit Magimel, who was her IRL lover. The combination is a dizzyingly romantic one. The Scent of Green Papaya Man delivers what is basically “The Intoxicating Aroma of Flash-Fried Loin of Beef” in a film so in love with sensuous pleasures of eating, its 30-odd minute opening of Nigella style sizzling and chopping, roasting, and saucing might leave you gnawing at your arm from hunger. In the spirit of the great foodie movies – Babette’s Feast, Big Night and Tampopo et al – it’s more than just cooking. Binoche shines as a talented cook who has a tender relationship with her boss (Magimel). It’s a time machine that takes you back to the 19th century, with its rural setting.

2. Io Capitano

  • Film
  • Adventure and action

Matteo Garrone’s (Gomorrah, Tale of Tales) hard-scrabble story of two Senegalese kids trying to reach Italy by land and water is at once bleak, bruising, and magical. As one of The Best Movies of 2024, it never sugarcoats migrant life, despite desert landscapes straight from a David Lean epic. Seydou and Moussa are played by Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall with charm and growing trepidation. They suffer greatly for their dream of a better future. This is a film that is both sensitive and stirring, as well as being incredibly relevant. It’s worth seeing on the big screens.

3. La Chimera

  • Film
  • Dramatic

Alice Rohrwacher is one of the few filmmakers who can balance the earthy with the fantastical. (Happy as Lazzaro). Josh O’Connor stars as a charming but dodgy British archeologist, a Graham Greene-like character dressed in a dirty suit on the hunt for Etruscan relics along with a group of colourful grave-robbers. La Chimera, a jalopy drive through rural 1980s Lazio with narrative hairpins and bumps, is shot through with surrealist beauties and grubby opportunism.

4. Challengers

  • Film

The sexiest thing to happen to tennis since Bjorn Borg launched his range of skimpy undies, Luca Guadagnino’s homoerotically-charged love triangle is like Jules and Jim sponsored by Head. Mike Faist, Josh O’Connor and Zendaya are all great as the jaded champ and scrappy couldna-beens facing off in a US Open Warm-up Event. But Zendaya steals show as the pointy part of the triangle. An injury-hit former prodigy who pours her ambitions into a husband Faist incapable of fulfilling them. Trent Reznor’s and Atticus Ros’s fierce electro score is their best since The Social Network.

5. I saw the TV Glow

  • Film
  • Horror

It may seem simplistic, but the elevator pitch is the best way to describe the second horror film from rising horror star Jane Schoenbrun (We’re all Going to the World’s Fair, due in 2021). It’s a story about two lonely teenagers who bond over an imaginary television show. But it’s a moody piece, heavy on atmosphere, thick with anxiety and a Day-Glo palette. Schoenbrun says it is also a metaphor for the trans experience. Though gender dysphoria never gets mentioned explicitly, the feeling of living in a world that’s not one’s own is clearly conveyed. It’s a nightmare and a raw emotional film with one of the best endings in recent years.

6. Inside Out 2

  • Film
  • Animation

Is Pixar back? No one had this nine-years-in-the-making sequel down as the film to save the multiplex summer. Inside Out 2 is a big film, not only for cinemas, but also for the cultural impact of an animation studio that was once a great one, struggling to find its place within the Disney hierarchy. It’s a great film, even if it isn’t quite as good as the first one. Maya Hawke’s voice is perfect for the jittery, but well-meaning, Anxiety. Pouchy, Pixar’s most creative piece of comedy relief, has now surpassed Forky and Spanish Buzz.

7. Iron Claw

  • Film
  • Dramatic

Sean Durkin’s drama set in the ’70s and the ’80s is not just for wrestling fans. It’s also for anyone who knows anything about the Von Erich story. As one of The Best Movies of 2024, it features Efron, bafflingly untroubled by awards attention, who physically transforms to play Kevin Von Erich, one of four siblings (The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is another) driven by their wrestler-turned-trainer father (Mindhunter’s Holt McCallany) beyond physical and emotional human limits. The less you know about the film, the better.

8. The Holdovers

  • Film

The Giamatti hive is assembling. You can hear some mild grumbling, and a little ‘no Merlot!’ He was one of cinema’s least appreciated actors (appreciated but not enough) for so long. Now, he has emerged as a hero in Alexander Payne’s bittersweet Christmas movie of the ’70s style. His popularity would make some of his characters sick. Payne’s oddly life affirming film is made by his spiky chemistry between Dominic Sessa and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as a history teacher who’s sour and the troubled pupil he’s stuck teaching over the holidays.
