A Melting Pot of Footballing Passion

Kolkata is the pulsating city capital in West Bengal, serves as the heartbeat of the CFL. The city’s passion for football is apparent and every game transforms the atmosphere into a blaze of enthusiasm and passion. Many clubs, each with its own unique history and enthusiastic fans, comprise the league’s rich tapestry.

Early Years (1890s-1910s)- Calcutta Football League

The Calcutta Football League (CFL) kicked off in 1898 as a two-tiered competition, inspired by the English Football League. Until 1937, the CFL served as a national event, open to any team. However, with the AIFF’s formation, the CFL transitioned into a regional tournament. It was the British Indian Army and European colonists played a key influence on the formation of the CFL as well, with Army teams winning the majority of championships until 1933. Indigenous teams such as Mohun Bagan and Aryan were first permitted in 1914 and Mohun Bagan advancing to the Premier Division in their debut season.

Rise of Native Dominance (1920s-1947)

East Bengal joined Calcutta Football League in 1921 and soon established themselves as a formidable team. Despite their successes, their rise up to Premier Division was blocked until rules were changed. Mohammedan SC became the first indigenous Indian team to be crowned the league champion in 1934. They dominated the league until 1941.

Calcutta Football League- Modern Era (1980s-Present)

CFL was known for fierce rivalries, specifically among Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, during both the 1980s and 1990s. The CFL’s popularity waned due to the advent of the NFL (now I-League) and the increasing demands for financial resources. In the decade of 2010, however, there was an increase in the popularity of the league as East Bengal winning eight consecutive championships up to the point that Mohun Bagan broke the streak in the year 2018. Peerless took the league title in 2019, becoming the first team other than the Big Three to do so since 1958.

A Rivalry with a Fierce Edge that Defines the League

The CFL has seen many epic fights, but none as famous than the Mohun-East Bengal bagan derby. The battle of titans transcends the boundaries of sport, and has become a phenomenon in the world of culture. Unmatched passion ignites this global soccer spectacle.
